Can CBD Oil help Fibromyalgia?
CBD Oil and Fibromyalgia, can it help?
Fibromyalgia (Wikipedia, 2016) is a chronic condition, characterised by widespread muscle pain, fatigue, concentration issues and sleep problems. It has been estimated by the NFA (National Fibromyalgia Association) that it affects about 10 million people, mainly women, in the US (NFA, 2016). In the UK the NHS are quoted as saying “Fibromyalgia typically develops between the ages of 30 to 50, and it is estimated that nearly 1 in 20 people may be affected by it” (NHS, 2016). Symptoms & severity vary from one individual to another and, depending on several factors such as the weather & the time of day, may also vary within the same individual.
As well as the afore-mentioned conditions there are a number of other symptoms, including discomfort in one or more specific areas of the body, and overall pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. The fibromyalgia patient may also have difficulty in concentrating, and sometimes may not be able to remember things. IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) is often present in people with Fibromyalgia and is characterised by symptoms such as diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain and bloating. Other fibromyalgia symptoms are painful menstrual periods, dizziness, dry mouth, eyes and skin, and highlighted sensitivity to noise, touch and bright light.
Fibromyalgia symptoms are often triggered by several factors which directly or indirectly worsen the condition. These include, but are not limited to, too much or too little rest, excessive exercise or a lack of exercise, depression, stress and anxiety and changes in the weather.
The cause of Fibromyalgia has remained a mystery to many doctors, with most only knowing that patients often experience increased sensation of pain due to a glitch in the central nervous system’s processing of pain information. The odds of someone developing this disorder may be increased by age, gender, history of rheumatic disease, family history and sleep problems. This last one leads to confusion as to whether lack of sleep is a symptom or a cause of fibromyalgia.
Cannabidiol Oil, or CBD
Cannabidiol Oil, or CBD, is regarded as a great help in the relief from the symptoms of fibromyalgia and is a completely natural substance. CBD oil as a dietary supplement is still under research which is yielding some great results but, although it looks promising for the future, there are a number of doubts or confusion surrounding its usage. Despite this, CBD oil has become widely recognised among sufferers as a means of relieving anxiety and inflammation, and has been gaining popularity worldwide.
A survey by The National Pain Institute showed that out of the 1339 people with fibromyalgia 62% of them reported that marijuana was very effective (Foundation, 2014) Research also revealed that almost all fibromyalgia patients that used CBD gave positive reviews as to its effectiveness. However, there are concerns amongst the fibromyalgia community with regards using CBD oil products. Whilst cannabis products contain a compound called THC - the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that produces a 'high' - there are no such issues when using CBD as this compound is non-psychoactive. In fact, research revealed that CBD Oil actually counteracts the paranoia and anxiety that can be caused by THC. In addition all of our CBD products contain 0% THC.
CBD Oil as a treatment for fibromyalgia
The question as to whether or not to use CBD as a treatment for fibromyalgia cannot be answered conclusively, as the overall health benefits and effects of it have not been fully researched. However, a large proportion of fibromyalgia patients who have used CBD revealed that the pain associated with their condition, which sometimes becomes unbearable, is either reduced or eliminated during the period within which CBD oil is still active in their body.
Other research carried out into the use of cannabidiol reveals that CBD is associated with a number of beneficial effects on some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Similarly, it is a known fact that the pain associated with the disorder may become unbearable at times, and also that CBD usage positively affects the endocannabinoid system of people with fibromyalgia, by relieving them of their pain. It can therefore be concluded that CBD, being an all natural remedy, should be considered for its proven and anecdotal effectiveness by several users. Please note that these statements have in no way been evaluated by US FDA and are not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any diseases. Thus, anyone willing to try this will be advised to seek the help of their medical provider or doctor before starting CBD or any other dietary supplement programme.
