CBD Oil and our Endocannadinoid System

The power of hemp lies in its ability to work so effectively with the human body’s immune system and the brain. This medical miracle starts to appear more like a match made in heaven upon further examination. Our bodies have built-in receptors, known as the endocannabinoid system, which allows fast and efficient delivery of THC and more importantly for us, CBD cannabinoids, among others that are still being studied.

The Discovery of the Endocannabinoid System

Dr. Ralph Mechoulam from Israel was responsible for discovering this new system of receptors in the 1990’s, opening the doors for much more focused research to see how THC and CBD interact with the body. Israel has led the race in cannabis research as they have much more progressive laws towards funding for agricultural and medical applications.

What Dr. Mechoulam found in this endocannabinoid system specifically was two identifiable patterns in the appearance of receptors that the body naturally produced. These are labeled CB1 and CB2 for brevity, each representing the major cannabinoid types. These receptors are made to accept natural cannabis, the synthetic compounds are notably slower with delivery and matching up with receptors.

The CB1 Receptors

These receptors are located mainly in the brain and only accept THC cannabinoids. This is what is commonly associated with getting high or feeling of calmness when taking marijuana. It is because of these receptors in the brain that marijuana has produced such dramatic healing properties with patients who suffer both physical and mental pains. These receptors further legitimise any clinical trials or research performed outside the lab.

The CB2 Receptors

Here you will find the location of these receptors intrinsically connected to the human immune system, primarily with the spleen, where major chemical processes are found. The CB2 receptors are not as heavily researched as the CB1s, and more research is needed to properly plot their location throughout the immune system. Luckily, the interest has only grown more with each year, thanks to public push to get hemp CBD oil strains legalised for the unprecedented benefits for epilepsy patients and other illnesses.

CB2 can only work with CBDs, as with CB1 can only accept THC. These highly specialised receptors within the endocannabinoid system will continue to fuel the search for more insight on how hemp extracts interacts with the body and provide more data on possible medical treatments.

Final Thoughts from The Hemp Doctor

This discovery of the EC system within our own bodies, which can only infer that somewhere along the line, our evolutionary path deemed it to be important enough to create specialised receptors to deliver this drug in the most efficient way possible (a sort of shortcut to the brain, in a sense) can only prove once and for all that marijuana is a legitimate and important part of modern medicine.

As more funding is made available for researchers to utilise, more hidden benefits will be realised as the endocannabinoid system is explored and expanded. Those who will be growing up with marijuana being legalised throughout the country may find it puzzling as to how we banned a plant that has never resulted in a single overdose or direct cause of death, yet is responsible for so much healing and relief.
